I didn't think I would find myself aligning with one candidate so soon, but with so much in the news how can you not?
Being a woman, I love that there is a strong woman candidate; but I just can't bring myself to support Clinton. Don't get me wrong, I loved Bill Clinton and thought both of them were a great team during his 8 years. But I just don't think Hillary is far enough away from the conventional. She followed right along in giving Bush a blank check to start a war and she's got a lot of other baggage. Not that baggage is necessarily wrong (some say Rudy's baggage of three marriages will cause him problems); but I'm just not getting a sincere feeling from her.
Ya know, to me, the one person who sounds good through all the sound bites is Barack Obama. No matter how small the sound bite, he sounds eloquent, sincere, smart and trustworthy. I can't believe that I missed seeing him when he was in Denison! I want to hear him in person to see if he's just as good as his sound bites! He so eloquently explains his own, internal struggles and admits that he's only human and can never be perfect. Have any of you read his books?
I think that we can only go up from where we are (unless Mitt is elected). The Bush Administration has taken us down a long, dark hole and has over-used the federal system to advance their personal agenda. It's disgusting that the American People have not said ENOUGH!!!!!
Well 2008 cannot come soon enough; but in the meantime let's discuss politics for awhile. Let's try not to call people names (except the candidates, if you so please) and let's hold the space for each person to voice their beliefs. Remember that the great thing about our country is that we have the freedom to express our thoughts and ideas. I know that forums can get pretty heated when talking politics, but if we remember not to attack each other on a personal level, things will be fine.
So, anyone feel like persuading me to another candidate? I haven't given any money so I'm not set on one, just leaning a particular way.

Re: have you chosen a presidential candidate, yet?
Mon, May 14, 2007 - 8:35 PMI have not - as a fairly recent immigrant to Iowa I just registered so I can participate in the caucuses - I lean to the far left and I can't wait! I really am appalled that so many people love Giuliani (sp?). I lived about 20 miles from NYC when 9/11 happened. It was election day in NYC for the new mayor. If it weren't for that, most people in the US wouldn't give a rat's a$$, many people would hate Rudy, and NY would have a socialist as a mayor (Steve Green was ahead in the polls by major double digits over Bloomberg). That was the big news of the day in the area in the morning at least . Anyway, the dude is a major creep. I am thinking Obama or Hilary - just that she voted with the worst president ever really annoys me. I really wish Barbara Boxer was running. Loved her in the CA state legislature, loved her as my US Senator, and still love her - she likes to piss people off and that rates really high in my book. If you aren't pissing people off you aren't doing your job. On the other side, I really don't see any strong candidates who will catch the middle of the road people who feel abandoned/cheated/lied to by the current administration. I feel McCain is pushing the age limit (as is Thompson who has not delcared), and there are the many others who push the limit of my tolerance and patience. I really hate smug men who want to tell me what I can and cannot do - especially if it all comes down to "god says x". If that is your logic, we are in a world of hurt.
What are other POVs? Convince me about something! -

Re: have you chosen a presidential candidate, yet?
Tue, May 15, 2007 - 6:46 AMAs much as I would love a female president I wish it was someone not related to a previous president. We've seen how well that works that the last 8 years. I am sick of the dynasties. So, Obama works for me, I want someone untainted by so much of Washington's evil. Still trying to decide if I will vote this time, vowed I would never vote again after last election's farce.

Re: have you chosen a presidential candidate, yet?
Tue, May 15, 2007 - 1:18 PMRon Paul is fantastic but unfortunately I don't think he has a chance. Thompson makes me want to stand up and cheer every time I hear him speak, though I think he may be a little on the Big Brotherish for my tastes. Why is it so hard to find some one who is willing to get government out of my wallet and who's still willing to secure the borders and not surender to the Islamic terrorists? It would seem to be fairly straight forward but no one is willing to step up to the plate.

Re: have you chosen a presidential candidate, yet?
Tue, May 15, 2007 - 7:43 PMObama...all the way.
I just think he's the real deal. Don't just listen to him speak...watch him speak. I went to his rally in I.C. a few weeks ago...he's straight forward, honest, no smearing or blaming...just the issues and the solutions. I really think this guy could open the door for a lot of other parties and candidates to do good work in the future. Everybody else is just saying the same crap and I'm sure. He's the only 'nice' candidate with the balls and the brains to pull off any change...in my humble opinion.
Hillary? no way...she's corporate, she's a Clinton and I just don't trust her.
Republicans? forget that crap...
Obama baby... -

Re: have you chosen a presidential candidate, yet?
Wed, May 16, 2007 - 8:25 PMi second it. let's put it to a vote already.
wait...it's like 18 mos away!!
i have a bad feeling about hillary getting the nomination.
not that i hate her.
i think a cadidate ought to have some
1. charisma (sp?)
and
2. speaking ability.
obama is smooth.
clinton is robotesque.
this will be the first caucus i participate in. it's too f-n' crucial not to.

Re: have you chosen a presidential candidate, yet?
Fri, May 18, 2007 - 4:35 PMI feel we are facing the same problems that have plagued us for years - the two party system just sucks. There is no way it adequately represents the vast majority of US citizens. We really need more from the Green party - do they have a strong candidate - hell, a candidate - this time around? Doing some minor legislative stuff for work last year, I found it fascinating that in many counties over 60% of Iowans are registered as Independent - ouch! That should tell us that neither of the two ruling parties is working out and we need serious change yet no one is doing it. Maybe this is why we just roll over when gas goes up 20 cents/gallon in five days ... -

Re: have you chosen a presidential candidate, yet?
Fri, May 18, 2007 - 9:10 PMI think everyone should be independent in politics, do away with ALL parties!
